Student Death and Community Support

Dear Colleagues,

Last night, our Union City community was greatly affected with a horrific tragedy.    One of our students, Sean Lemus, an eleventh grader at Union City High School was hit by a vehicle on the corner of 31st Street and Palisade Avenue and passed away due to his serious injuries.

To compound the situation, three Union City Police Officers were also critically injured as they responded to the area of the deadly accident.

As we are challenged with these unprecedented tragedies that impact our educational community, we also grow stronger as a family and always provide the necessary resources to those affected.  I would like to personally thank our Mayor, Brian P. Stack, our Union City Chief of Police, Richard Molinari, the many police officers, the North Hudson Fire Chief, Frank Montagne, the many firemen, and all the community that came together.  In addition, Mr. Ryan Lewis, Principal of Union City High School and the staff at UCHS along with district supervisors, social workers and personnel that provided the support needed to grieving students and staff.

A fundraiser will be established next week for all those affected.  Details will follow. Please keep the affected families in your thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,

Isabel Pereiras for Mrs. Silvia Abbato, Superintendent of Schools
